What is a PSA?

public service announcement (PSA) or public service ad, are messages in the public interest disseminated by the media without charge, with the objective of raising awareness, changing public attitudes and behavior towards a social issue.

Explore some PSAs from the following websites, and try analyzing them using the questions to the right.

Analyzing a PSA

When watching sample Public Service Annoucements (PSAs) take note of the following questions:

  • Who is the author and what is the purpose?
  • What creative techniques are used to attract and hold attention?
  • How might different people understand this message?
  • What lifestyles, values, and points of view are represented?
  • What is omitted?

Also, think about the choice of:

  • background music/soundtrack,
  • sound,
  • narration,
  • use of images,
  • filming techniques, and
  • editing techniques.
