Essential Question

How can I show what I learned in library last year?

Lesson 1 - Everything is Awesome!

  • Video: Watch "Kid President's Pep Talk to Teachers and Students." Note that he tells everybody to READ!

 

  • Discussion: Use chart paper to capture ways we can make this school year AWESOME. During checkout, if they choose their books quickly, the kids can make signs illustrating these ideas to decorate the library.
     
  • Review: In order for the students to get their library cards, they have to share a circulation or book care rule. (They can make signs for these too.)

Lesson 2 - Parts of a Book Cover

  • Review: Hold up a book and point to various items on its cover: title, author, illustrator, spine, barcode, and finally call number. Ask the kids what call numbers are used for. Remind them that each one has two parts: the first tells you the neighborhood, and the second tells you the street address. Ask someone to go over to the E neighborhood. See if anyone remembers what the second part of an E call number is (first letter of the author's last name).
     
  • Activity 1: Go over a few examples of E call numbers for people in the school (me, the principal, the classroom teacher). Then have each student state what their call number would be if they wrote a picture book.
     
  • Activity 2: Give each student a copy of the Parts of a Book Cover handout and ask students to read the instructions. Before they start, remind them that they must do all three steps correctly in order to get their library card for checkout. (NOTE: I do not have an electronic copy of the assignment, but here's what it looks like - I need to update with barcode for 2017.)

Lesson 3 - Find It

  • Review: Ask for an explanation of how E call numbers work.
     
  • Activity 1: Let the students know that in order to find books quickly, they need to know their alphabet! Have them get into two teams and race to see which team can find books with the correct E call numbers first (see file below). Make a note of how long it takes for everyone to finish. If there's time, have the kids go again and/or have them grab a book out of the pile and line up in shelf order.

Lesson 4 - The Z Was Zapped!

  • Introduction: Remind the students that the E section of the library is organized in alphabetical order by author’s last name. A lot of kids had trouble finding books on the shelf last week, so we’re going to read an alphabet book to review the order of the letters. Explain that each letter has something happening to it, and their job is to figure out what the action is. Point out that the action starts with the same letter being featured.
     
  • Readaloud: On each page, ask the students to raise their hand if they think they can figure out what action is happening to the letter. Some of the pages, like J, could be described by several words. 
     
  • Activity: When the readaloud is done, hold up the book cover outline and explain to the kids that they will now create their own book cover using "The Z Was Zapped" as a model. Their covers (template below) must contain three elements:

    - Title featuring a letter of the alphabet having something done to it that starts with the same letter
    - Their full name as author
    - Their E call number on the spine

    If they have time, they may draw an illustration.

    Review E call numbers briefly – ask the students, for example, what the call numbers would be if various teachers wrote an “everyone” book.


    Monitor the students as they work, helping with spelling and ensuring that the words match the letters. When a student finishes their cover, give them their library card. When there are only 10 minutes left, instruct the students still working to hand their covers in at the circulation desk, because you need to check out books.

     
  • Assessment:
     

    1 = Two or more required elements missing

    2 = One required element missing

    3 = All three required elements appear: alliterative title, author's full name, and correct call number

    4 = All three required elements appear, in addition to exceptional creativity (i.e., does not repeat any of the pages from the original book or that of their friends)
     


 

Lesson 5 - Find It 2

  • Review: Ask for an explanation of how E call numbers work.

  • Activity 1: Give students who need to finish their covers 5-10 minutes to work; those who are done can look for books to checkout. Hold up completed book covers and read the title and author. For each one, ask someone to tell you what the call number would be. Hand them back and have the kids line up in alphabetical order of the letter featured on their cover.
     
  • Activity 2: Redo activity 2 from Lesson 1 above. Time it and see if the kids manage to finish more quickly than last time. If not, have them do it again!
