Westerly Middle School Library: Copyright & Plagiarism

Promoting lifelong learning and encouraging exploration in curious minds.

Plagiarism - What is it?

Plagiarism is taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as your own. Use quotations when using someone else's words and be sure to provide sources and cite the works you use for your research. Give credit to the original authors!

You can use the following websites to help generate your citations:

Copyright - What is it?

Copyright gives the creator of an original work (for example, a story, song, poem, or movie) the exclusive right to its use and distribution. A copyright owner may give permission to use copyrighted work.

Under the copyright law, the creator of the original work is its author. The author is also the owner of copyright unless there is a written agreement by which the author assigns the copyright to another person or entity, such as a publisher. (U.S. Copyright Office)

Creative Commons - What is it?

Creative Commons Works: this refers to a collection of images, music, videos, and more that are copyright free and can be shared without citation.

Students can find creative commons licensed material (that do not need to be cited) to use at:
