International Book Giving Day takes place on 14th February each year. The aim? To get books into the hands of as many children as possible.

14th February is about sharing the love of books! #giveabook

International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books.

Feb. 24: World Read Aloud Day

"World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words and creates a community of readers taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all people. By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their futures: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their stories."

Feb. 17: Digital Learning Day

Started in 2012, Digital Learning Day has provided a powerful venue for education leaders to highlight great teaching practice and showcase innovative teachers, leaders, and instructional technology programs that are improving student outcomes. This grassroots effort blossomed into a massive nationwide celebration as teachers realized that Digital Learning Day is not about technology, it’s about learning.

Children's Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.

All Kindergarten through Grade 5 students will read, discuss and evaluate picture books.

The Picture Book Give Away will be Nov. 16-20 during regularly scheduled library classes.  Every Guiteras student will select a free picture book for enjoyment and to help build his/her "home library."  The Picture Book Give Away is made possible by generous donations of gently used and well-loved books from the students and staff.  If you would like to donate books, please feel free to send books to the school library any time during the the school year or email Teacher-Librarian Ms. Galipeau via galipeaun@bw.k12.ri.us to make other arrangements.

Nov. 2-6: Media Literacy Week

Students in each grade level will explore the impact of media, with a special focus on media in popular "kid" culture, on their lives.

URI's Media Lab's "Media Literacy SmartPhone" Teaching Tool

We will be using the tool " to introduce a structured approach that helps students learn to critically analyze any media text --- web sites, books, advertising, news, TV shows, movies, video games, magazines and music. One side of the smartphone displays the various "apps" for analyzing a media text and the other side displays the 'five critical questions' of media literacy developed by Renee Hobbs."*

February - Book Drive for International Book Giving Day

Book Drive: Feb. 1-12

Students and staff are encouraged to donate gently used books for the International Book Giving Day project.  Books can be sent to the school library with students or email Teacher-Librarian Ms. Galipeau via galipeaun@bw.k12.ri.us to make other arrangements.  Students will select the nonprofit organization(s) that will distribute the donated books to children. Be sure to follow us (@guiteraslibrary) on Twitter for updates on the project.

Feb. 24: World Read Aloud Day

Students will create a menu of choices to decide how they will celebrate World Read Aloud Day.

Possibilities may include:

*Reading to a student from another class or grade level

*Making a recording or video of himself/herself reading and posting on the Guiteras Library web site to share with the Guiteras Community

*Reading aloud via Skype with a special listener

*Having a special reader visit the class to read aloud to them

Feb. 17: Digital Learning Day

Because "...Digital Learning Day is not about technology, it’s about learning" students will tweet about their learning throughout the day.  Please follow them @guitlibkids and respond to their tweets (with #2016guitlibdld) to make the experience authentic and interactive, as well as to model positive digital citizenship behavior.  The Twitter dialogue will be archived on Storify and shared on the Guiteras Library web site.
