Learning Targets

Common Core English Language Arts Alignment - Reading Informational Texts

RI.2.5: Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

Common Core English Language Arts Alignment - Writing

W.2.7- Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).

W.2.8- Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Common Core Math Alignment

MP.2- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

MP.4- Model with mathematics.

2.MD.D.10- Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems.

Next Generation Science Standards

NGSS 2LS4.D.1: Biodiversity and Humans: There are many different kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land and in water.

NGSS 2LS4.1: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Project Based Learning - Diversity of Living Things (STEMscopes)

"The zoo in your city is excited to announce they will be adding two new exhibits! In the next few months, the zoo will receive many new plants and animals to create these new exhibits. The zoo has ordered sea grass, evergreen trees, moss, kelp, sharks, short grass, moose, whales, lynx, jellyfish, kelp, wild boar, and coral.

The zoo has asked you to help select a habitat and design a new exhibit for the organisms. Because the organisms are coming soon, your team has been asked to select only one habitat to design and present.

Your team will design a poster that displays the characteristics of the habitat. The habitat must
include at least two plants and three animals. Each organism must be labeled, and the poster
must be colored.

Your habitat design will be presented to a committee of zoo employees. Your and your team will
present the poster and explain the characteristics of the chosen habitat and why the selected
animals should live there. Your presentation should be three to five minutes long.

Thank you for helping the zoo become a better place to visit."

Research

Dear Second-Graders,

Use the web sites and resources to research organisms.  Take notes on your graphic organizer.

Happy Learning,

Mrs. Hyllested, Mrs. Hall and Ms. Galipeau

PS If you need help, remember the research focus...

  • What characteristics could help you identify where the animal lives? Some examples of animal characteristics are: the color, its size, whether it has fins, and its type of feet.

  • What characteristics could help you identify where the plant lives? Some examples of plant characteristics are: the leaf size, its height, its leaf coating, and its ability to store water.
