NORWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: LIBRARY SERVICE POLICY

Norwood Elementary School: Library Service Policy

Norwood Elementary School in the Warwick Public Schools is a neighborhood school where most children are within walking distance to the building.  The enrollment is approximately 350 students, and the grades span from K-6.  In addition, there is a Severe Profound Autistic classroom as well as Reading, Resource, OT, PT, Speech, Music, physical education, library and music for Norwood’s Students.  There is an active PTA and numerous after school activities and programs planned during the school day, throughout the year.  Many students attend the Boys and Girls Club located in the Norwood neighborhood before and after school.

The Norwood School Library Media Center is located in the middle of the school and serves as its nucleus, is efficiently run by two state-certified School Library Media Specialists, and is open to whole classes, individual students, teachers, and faculty on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9am to 3pm, closed on weekends. The library is not open to the public.

Norwood Library Media Center contains approximately 7,400 items consisting of hardcover and paperback books, magazines, reference materials, electronics and other.  Students arrive weekly for book circulation, grades ranging from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade and one Severe, Profound Autistic Class.  Students are strongly encouraged to check out at least one book a week, of Non-Fiction or Fiction (chapter and picture book sections.)  Students gain access to the Library collection by physically browsing the shelves or by using the electronic catalog on www.ricat.net.  Students also visit the library to use electronics (desktops/chromebooks) for classroom research and quick access to a variety of reliable websites.

There are four desktop computers and 4 NT- computing stations.  The Norwood Library Media Center also owns 13 chromebooks for student use. There is a desktop for the Library Media Specialist’s Circulation/Book check out needs.  The Library has an LCD projector, an Eno board, and an Elmo document reader for whole group lessons of instruction.

The Library is a warm and inviting place to visit, with students stopping in to check out books, research, view new titles, or to volunteer.  There is an active student and parent volunteer group that takes pride in keeping the library well organized and attractive for all type book browsers.  There is a Libguide library website to continue a home-school connection for research after school hours, for easy access to the library’s research databases or teacher websites.  There are presently no after school activities but students participate in the popular Rhode Island Children’s Book Awards reading incentive, and Norwood School hosts an annual Spring Scholastic Book fair, as well as participating in a whole-school Reading Week with an exciting calendar of events planned for the entire school population.
