  • Select one book from any of the high school reading lists provided here (click on the images to the right to view lists).  You have the additional option of selecting the favorite book of a family member as long as your parent or guardian approves the selection.
  • The expectation, upon returning to school, is that you will be able to communicate your understanding of your chosen book, through either a writing or speaking assignment. You may, but are not required to, use one of the following organizers:

High School Recommended Reading Lists

Rhode Island Teen Book Award    Read Across Rhode Island  Alex Book Award
Coretta Scott King Award  National Book Award  Newbery Award
Rainbow Book Award  Walter Book Award  YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for YA  Young Adult Science Book Award

  • Please note that while it is not possible for your child’s teacher to have read a majority of the books on the lists we’ve provided, the selections have been vetted by well-respected panels of library media specialists and preteen/adolescent educators.
  • We strongly advise parents/guardians to preview the content and summaries of the book options before their child chooses one to read. This will help families work together to choose a book that best fits the student’s interests, reading level, and maturity level.
  • All of the book titles on the lists are available in print for free at the public library.  Many books are also available in digital format as eBooks, audiobooks, books on CD, and portable media players (Playaway) at the public library.
