Burrillville School Libraries Procedure Manual

Library Policies and Services

The libraries serve the students, faculty, and staff of the Burrillville schools. The libraries provide access to a variety of print and non-print resources including books, magazines, DVDs, online databases, and eBooks. All print materials (excluding reference books) can be checked out from the library, and all digital resources, including the library catalog, are available online. The library also lends equipment as needed. The library websites, which are regularly updated and maintained, streamline access to tools and resources for students and teachers.

The middle school and high school libraries participate in interlibrary loan through RILINK (Rhode Island Library Information Network for Kids) and LORI (Library of Rhode Island). With the exception of reference materials, all books, magazines, and DVDs are available to be borrowed by patrons of all LORI member libraries. The library adheres to the RILINK Interlibrary Loan Policy.

The Library Media Specialists provide class instruction regularly and individual instruction as needed on the use of the online databases, library catalog, and technology to support teaching and learning, particularly to help students to meet the requirements of the common course assessments. The library also promotes lifelong reading and the pursuit of individual interests through activities such as book explorations, read-ins, reading challenges, and technology workshops.

School Libraries and Intellectual Freedom

The school libraries in Burrillville are guided by the principles set forth in the Library Bill of Rights and its interpretative statements, including Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Program and The Students’ Right to Read statement of the National Council of Teachers of English.
