World Lit 2 Ethical Philosophy Paper: Project Home

Your Task

The Research Paper

You will write an informational essay that focuses on one of the ethical philosophies we have studied in class:

  • Utilitarian Approach (greatest good for the greatest number)
  • Kantian Ethics Approach (duty and universal moral laws)
  • Fairness/Justice Approach (Rawls) (equal liberty, opportunity, and the difference principle)
  • Common Good Approach (actions that strengthen the community and benefit everyone)
  • Virtue Approach (Aristotle) (developing good character and practicing the Golden Mean)

Your paper must have a clear controlling statement that explains the philosophy and its significance.

Develop a Research Plan - PREsearch

The most time consuming part of any research project is the research. Plan your time wisely. Some 70-80% of your time should be devoted to reading and research so you thoroughly understand your subject. The remaining time is for writing. However, do not leave writing of the last minute. Remember, if you leave printing to the last minute, there are bound to be printer problems!

Develop your research topic with PRE-search strategies

Using your background knowledge, begin preliminary research. Preliminary research is not research used as evidence in your paper. It is an overview of your topic to help you learn a little more and determine what specifics you may want to focus on for your controlling statement.

Begin by asking yourself research questions that will help you focus your paper. For example:

  • What is the main principle of this ethical philosophy?
  • How does this philosophy define “the right thing to do”?
  • What examples from history, literature, or current events illustrate this philosophy?
  • Why might this approach be appealing or challenging in today’s world?
  • How does this philosophy compare to or differ from another approach?

Always consider your audience:

  • Who will read your paper?
  • Why will it be of interest to them?
  • What will be new to them?
