Keyword and Subject Searching in RICAT
KEYWORD - a keyword search looks for your search terms anywhere in the catalog. They might be in a title, a description of a book, or subject headings.
SUBJECT - a subject search looks for your terms in the assigned subject headings to books. Subject headings are assigned to a book by librarians so that all books on a certain topic can be found together by searching for that term.
There are two ways to find the SUBJECT heading for a topic:
- Do a KEYWORD search, find a book that looks relevant to your topic and look at the SUBJECT headings for that book.
- Do a KEYWORD search and then click on Browse Subjects at the top of the page.
***If you are having trouble finding books on your topic, try both kinds of searches!***

The EWG Jr/Sr Library is a member of the RILINK (RI Library Information Network for Kids) consortium. As RILINK members, we are able to participate in Inter-library loan with nearly 150 other schools throughout RI. This means that EWG students have access to over one million items, and are able to request books and other items. These items are then delivered to the EWG Library free of charge! Students can request items through the EWG page at http://www.ricat.net, and should see Ms. Winner if they have questions about how to request items through inter-library loan.
