SKHS Library Learning Commons September 2018

Welcome to the new SKHS Library Learning Commons

The Vision

The focus of the Library Learning Commons will be to step away from the traditional model and improve teaching and learning through the use of the space and support from the Research and Learning Commons Specialist. The Library Learning Commons will be a space conducive to collaboration and exploration. Students will utilize the space to access resources and tools that will push them to think critically, stay connected and actively participate in their learning. The main focus points will be:

INNOVATION & CREATION
RESEARCH AND INQUIRY
LITERACY SKILLS
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION

There are some exciting changes that have taken place in the new Library Learning Commons at SKHS. In hopes to create a space that is inviting to students, teachers and the community, we have made some design changes to meet the needs of today's learning. We have:

  • Dedicated spaces for both group and individual work.
  • Flexible furnishings that facilitate current social, learning, and library program trends and maximize the use of the space.
  • Improved access to in-house academic support. Students will have continued opportunities to work with Mrs. Pantaleo on research and maker projects.

Currently Students and Teachers are Utilizing the Space to:

Collaborate with Mrs. Pantaleo on exploring research tools and databases with students to increase inquiry skills

Utilize the Maker Space area to produce high quality posters and artwork, build a small recording studio, explore the use of the green and blue screens for animation purposes, beginning usage of the Adobe Creative Cloud for graphic design

Explore presentation tools and skills necessary for senior portfolio/project

Access and explore fiction and non-fiction texts, both digitally and in hard copy form, to support current units being covered in class.

Participate in workshops such as College Essay Writing and Google Calendar for the HS student
