Library Grading

Participation Grades:

Participates and successfully completes
class activities.

4 – Exceeds Expectations- Student produces work that consistently EXCEEDs the standard for this reporting period.

3 – Meets Expectations- Student produces work that regularly MEETs the standard for this reporting period.

2 – Approaching Expectations- Student produces work that is BEGINNING TO MEET the standard or is PROGRESSING TOWARD standard, shows evidence of achieving the standard some of the time.

1 – Needs Improvement- The student is not yet meeting the standard for this reporting period.

 

Conduct Grades:

Respectful to teachers and peers and is
responsible with computer equipment and
library materials.

4 – Exceeds Expectations-The student consistently follows school rules, uses appropriate behavior and social skills, and follows instructions and procedures without being asked. 

3 – Meets Expectations- The student follows school rules, uses appropriate behavior and social skills, and follows instructions and procedures with little reminders. 

2 – Approaching Expectations- The student is inconsistent in following school rules, using appropriate behavior and social skills, or following instructions and procedures. 

1 – Needs Improvement- The student is reminded often of school rules, appropriate behavior and social skills, or instructions and procedures. 

 

Equipment and Material Grades:

Demonstrates competence when using technology
equipment and library materials.
 

4 – Exceeds Expectations- Uses technology and library materials safely and independently.  Finds what they need easily and uses tools correctly. Always returns books on time and in great condition.

3 – Meets Expectations- Uses technology and library materials correctly with few reminders. Can find needed resources. Returns books on time and in good condition.

2 – Approaching Expectations- Needs some help using technology or finding materials. Sometimes forgets rules or how to handle items properly. Occasionally returns books late or with minor issues.

1 – Needs Improvement- Often struggles to use technology or library materials even with help. Does not follow rules or handle items correctly. Frequently returns books late or damaged.

 

***In the library, I remind students as long as they give me considerable effort and follow the directions completely they will do fine. I post the directions in many different places for them to refer back to: on the worksheet, whiteboard, or projector. I set them up for success, but it is up to them to complete the task at hand.***

While Reading with your Child

Questions to ask your child while reading:

  • Study the pictures and ask questions about the pictures.

  • Make predictions about the story based on the book cover.

  • Notice some words are longer than others.

  • "I wonder what is going to happen next..."

  • "I wonder how the character is feeling..."

  • "I wonder what the character is thinking..."

About our Library

Dear Paul Cuffee School Families,

 

Welcome to another fabulous year at the Paul Cuffee Lower School Library.  Your children will visit the library once a week for stories, lessons, and book selection. The goal of our space is for students to be safe, respectful, and responsible in order to become critical thinkers, engaged readers, skilled researchers, and ethical users of information and technology. Their teacher will let you know when library class is scheduled. 

 

Each grade level can borrow a certain number of books as follows:

 

Kindergarten: will be able to borrow one book that they can take from the library and read in their classroom

 

1st grade: starts the year with one book then progresses to 2 books.

 

2-5th grade: 2 books

  • Books are checked out for a 2-week period. They may be renewed if there is not a waiting list 
  • With their teacher’s permission, children may exchange their books in the morning before class 
  • There are no fines for late books, but if books are overdue for an extended period, borrowing privileges may be suspended
  • Books that are lost or damaged must be replaced or paid for 
  • Encourage your children to take responsibility for their library books and help them to take care of them
  • Help them remember their library day.  
  • Each student is encouraged to keep their library books in their backpack when they are not being read to stay safe and to make sure they get returned.
  • If the book is damaged, please don’t try to repair it yourself.  Have your child show me the damage so I can attempt to fix it using special library mending supplies. 
  •  Encourage your children to come to me with any questions regarding their books. We can solve any problem if it is brought to my attention. 
  • Find some time to read with your child and encourage them to read to you.

Estimadas familias de la escuela Paul Cuffee:

 

Bienvenidos a otro año fabuloso en la biblioteca de la escuela primaria Paul Cuffee. Sus hijos visitarán la biblioteca una vez por semana para leer cuentos, recibir lecciones y seleccionar libros. El objetivo de nuestro espacio es que los estudiantes estén seguros, sean respetuosos y responsables para convertirse en pensadores críticos, lectores comprometidos, investigadores hábiles y usuarios éticos de la información y la tecnología. Su maestro le informará cuándo está programada la clase de la biblioteca.

 

Cada nivel de grado puede tomar prestado una cierta cantidad de libros de la siguiente manera:

 

Kinder: podrá tomar prestado un libro que puede tomar de la biblioteca y leer en su salón de clases

 

1.  er grado: comienza el año con un libro y luego avanza a 2 libros.

 

2.º a 5.º grado: 2 libros

 

Los libros se prestan por un período de 2 semanas. Pueden renovarse si no hay una lista de espera

Si el libro está dañado, no intente repararlo usted mismo. Haga que su hijo me muestre el daño para que pueda intentar arreglarlo usando suministros especiales para reparar la biblioteca.

Anime a sus hijos a que vengan a mí con cualquier pregunta sobre sus libros. Podemos resolver cualquier problema si se me informa.
