Grade 6 Dunbar ELA: Tolerance Section 4: Dunbar ELA: Tolerance

Unit Overview

During this ELA unit, students will explore the theme of "Tolerance" through the dual lenses of fiction text and nonfiction research. The classroom teacher, teacher librarian, and reading specialist presented possible titles to students, giving a "booktalk" for each title.  Students voted on their favorite titles and were grouped with like-minded peers.  Each group will read one fiction novel and will learn about the book's theme by completing nonfiction research. Selected novels include tolerance issues of racism, individuality and bullying, quality of life, immigration, persecution due to religion, autism, and more. Throughout the unit, students will complete reflective responses (See "Class Handouts").
