Grade 7 Social Studies: Unit on Racism: Racism: From Slavery to Present Day

Unit Overview

During this Social Studies unit, students will explore the theme of "Racism" through a variety of resources, print and digital. This is a collaborative unit between our Social Studies teachers in grade seven, Mr. Browner and Mrs. Mello.  Each group of students will read nonfiction selections and will learn about how racism has evolved over time, from the time of slavery to the present day. Students will demonstrate evidence of learning through various activities, including multiple opportunities to  read and respond. Selected resources include a comparison of court cases Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education, a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and more.
