Special Program: Hour of Code and CS@guiteraslibrary

In 2003, the Guiteras Library program provided instruction and access for students to participate in the Hour of Code’s national campaign to introduce 10 million students to one hour of computer science. In 2016, Gov. Raimondo launched CS4RI.  “CS4RI (Computer Science for Rhode Island) is a state initiative to bring high quality computer science (CS) learning experiences to all students.”

Through the Guiteras Library program, all K-5 students have participated in the Hour of Code initiative since its beginning in 2003.  The instructional goal has been to teach learning activities based on computational thinking skills and approaches within context of the library’s mission in regard to digital citizenship and media literacy.

Last year, Guiteras students focused on coding loops (a sequence of instructions that repeat), which encompasses the computational thinking skills of patterns and abstraction.  This year, we will focus on coding events (actions that cause something to happen like clicking the “send” in an email). Learning about everyday examples of events and then coding their own events will encompass the computational thinking skills of algorithms and logic.

By participating in the Hour of Code project, we take another step toward the goal that "the Library should be more of a kitchen than a grocery store" (Joyce Valenza, Assistant Professor of Teaching at Rutgers University School of Information and Communication, a technology writer, speaker, blogger and learner).
