Artifact #1: Copyright & Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers

Artifact #1: Copyright & Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers

Description:

The Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers chart is helpful to inform teachers of what they may do under the law based on different scenarios such as printed material, illustrations, photographs, video, music, software, internet, and television.

I posted the Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines around my school to help guide myself and fellow teachers in maintaining legal and ethical principles regarding copying and printing intellectual property.  Article IV of the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association states that librarians “respect intellectual property rights and advocate balance between the interests of information users and rights holders.”  “Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression (Butler, 2016, p. 9).”  Copyright protects published and unpublished original works including images, music, movies, literature, and other artistic works.

Butler, R. (Nov/Dec 2016). Copyright review and basics.  Knowledge Quest 45(2), p. 8-17.

How artifact demonstrates meeting the standard:

This artifact demonstrates meeting standard 11 by following federal law pertaining to educational and instructional issues such as copying and printing, which teachers take part in every day.  In addition, in following these Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines, I am demonstrating following professional conduct and modeling for my peers.

Why I chose this artifact:

I chose this artifact to demonstrate mastery of standard 11 because I often needed help remembering the copyright and fair use guidelines to adhere to my professional organization’s Code of Ethics; therefore, I decided to post this information for everyone’s use.  I have found it helpful to view before I decide to print or copy information for class use and have received comments from other teachers who have found it helpful as well.

Artifact #2: Journey to Success Discipline Form

Artifact #2: Journey to Success Discipline Form

Description:

The Journey to Success Discipline form is our school-wide procedure for documenting incorrect student behavior.  This form is filled out by the teacher the incident occurs with and is then sent to classroom teachers, the principal, and to the guardians of the student.  The back of the form also contains a discipline procedural workflow to follow based on different levels of problem behaviors.

How artifact demonstrates meeting the standard:

This artifact demonstrates meeting standard 11 because by following the discipline procedure flowchart and filling out the Journey to Success Discipline form, I am following school policy and procedures.  In addition, by following school policy and procedures in reference to discipline, it allows me to interact with students and parents in a professional manner that is fair and equitable.

Why I chose this artifact:

I chose this artifact to demonstrate mastery of standard 11 because student behavior has been such a prominent part of every school day.  It is important to have behavior policies and procedures in place so that students know what to expect, how discipline is handled, and have an understanding as to why and how to improve.  In doing so, students are treated equitably, fairly, and with their best interest and needs at heart.
