"Oedipus Rex" is a powerful Athenian tragedy written by Sophocles, first produced sometime around 429 BC. The story picks up with Oedipus, who has become King of Thebes after solving the Riddle of the Sphynx. However, after receiving a prophecy by the Oracle at Delphi, Oedipus learns he is doomed to suffer the fate of killing his father and marrying his mother. The story leans into the lesson that no man can escape the fate set out for him by the gods as, ironically, Oedipus searches for his father's killer who is in fact, himself. Considered a masterpiece of ancient Greek antiquity, "Oedipus Rex" has become the base for many modern tales today.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. The Jungle is a 1906 novel written by the American journalist and novelist Upton Sinclair, written to portray the lives of immigrants in the United States in Chicago and similar industrialized cities. Many readers were most concerned with his exposure of health violations and unsanitary practices in the American meatpacking industry during the early 20th century, based on an investigation he did for a socialist newspaper. The book depicts working class poverty, the lack of social supports, harsh and unpleasant living and working conditions, and a hopelessness among many workers. These elements are contrasted with the deeply rooted corruption of people in power.

The Joy Luck Club explores the tender and tenacious bond between four daughters and their mothers. The daughters know one side of their mothers, but they don't know about their earlier never-spoken of lives in China. Rarely does a single book alter the course of history, but Rachel Carson's Silent Spring did exactly that. The outrcry that followed its publication in 1962 forced the banning of DDT and spurred the revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Carson's passionate concern for the future of our planet reverberated powerfully throughout the world, and her eloquent book was instrumental in launching the environmental movement.
