Discusses the protest march that occurred in Selma on March 7, 1965. It was led by John Lewis and a student group committed to non-violence. The march was blocked by state troopers who ordered the protesters to return home. When Lewis attempted to discuss the situation the state troopers were ordered to enter the crowd and injured over fifty people. This violence was shown on television across the United States and the event became known as Bloody Sunday. In Selma, Alabama, less than 1 percent of eligible African Americans were registered to vote due to continued discrimination and segregation. When activist Jimmy Lee Jackson was shot point blank by policemen, a march that was later to be known as Bloody Sunday was organized. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) led a campaign to counteract resistance to black voting in Selma, Alabama, in the early 1960s. They were joined by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in bringing black voting rights to national attention. Six hundred nonviolent marchers set off for Montgomery on a Sunday in 1965. More than fifty ended up in the hospital after being beaten by state troopers.

Selma marchers stopped to pray before walking silently through the streets on the way to Montgomery, Alabama on March 7, 1965. As six hundred marchers reached the Edmund Pettus Bridge, about 150 people were waiting for them. State troopers, deputies, and others made up the posse that waited with tear gas, bull whips, and clubs. Read John Lewis' testimony from a federal hearing about what happened that day. The leader of the march wound up with a skull fracture after being hit twice with a club. This includes testimony from a trial.

Consensus in the civil rights movement was difficult to achieve as some groups wanted to use violence to achieve their goals. Dr. King emphasized non violence, and for this, he was attacked. The March on Montgomery was met with violence, but ultimately led to its main goal: equal voting rights for blacks.
