Summer Learning: School-wide Summer Reading

Click on the tabs to view the assignments, requirements, reading lists, etc. for your classes.

This summer, students have a list of book choices curated by the teachers in several departments at BHS. You may read any title selected by any of the departments (see the tabs below) and participate meaningfully in an Eagle Block book discussion during the first few weeks of school. You will receive 1 extra credit point on your final quarter one grade for your course in the department from which you chose your book. You will only receive credit for one book.

Browse the titles below. Read the descriptions and some reviews of the titles that interest you before you make your choice. If you have concerns about the difficulty of the books on the list, please click here for information about the difficulty and Lexile level of the books on the list.

The Assignment

  • Once you’ve chosen a title, get a copy of the book. Books will be available at the Barrington Public Library or  students can request a copy through the Rhode Island interlibrary loan system. An audiobook version may also be available and Mrs. Hunicke can help you if you encounter any barriers. All books are also available as eBooks and/or audiobooks on SORA (log in with your school email and password) or through the Barrington Public Library eZone. Click here for more information on how to get a Barrington Public Library card online.

  • Read the book. Make note of any interesting passages or facts to use as evidence during the book club discussion.

  • During the first few weeks of school, an Eagle Block will be reserved for Summer Reading Book Clubs. Sign up with a teacher who has read the same book. Participate meaningfully in the book discussion for participation credit. A rubric will be posted. See this rubric for a description of meaningful participation.

  • What does participation credit earn me? Reading anything makes you smarter in everything, so you will learn something! But also, if you read the book and participate meaningfully in the Book Club discussion, you’ll also earn 1 extra credit point. This point will be on top of your final quarter one grade in a course in the department from which you chose your book. You can only receive credit for one book.
