East Greenwich School District Summer Work: AP English Literature and Composition

Work students from Cole Middle School and East Greenwich High School are expected to complete over the summer, prior to school opening.

Summer Reading Requirements for Course: AP English Literature and Composition

Summer Work Required in AP English Literature and Composition

Overview: In order to prepare thoroughly for your May 2023 exam in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, you must accomplish significant reading over this summer. We simply do not have time to do all of this reading during the school year while we are also working on writing. Accordingly, summer reading will include reading AND an additional assignment regarding the following works:

Fiction Titles and Assignments (see descriptions below):

  1. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, and A Streetcar Named Desire prompts.
  2. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Crime and Punishment prompts.
  3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens OR any title from the following list of books that have been suggested by The College Board on the AP Literature and Composition Exam.

Assessment of Summer Reading:  Your grade for these summer readings will be based on notoriously difficult multiple choice plot tests (50%) and your outlines or annotations (50%). There will also be several Socratics on each work.

Required Summer Reading Book #1

Required Reading #1. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.

  • You may want to gather a group to watch the Marlon Brando black and white movie version after everyone’s read it.
  • In addition to the reading, you must create sentence outlines responding to two of the following questions: A Streetcar Named Desire Prompts (link to prompts below).

Required Summer Reading Book #2

Required Reading #2. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

  • This is a dense, dense text. Even for people who love literature and read quickly, it's not an easy book to get through, so don't try to plow through it in the three days before school starts. You'll ruin the end of your summer. I leave it here because it becomes a favorite book of all time for some students.
  • In addition to the reading, you must create sentence outlines responding to two of the following questions: Crime and Punishment Prompts.
