Garden City School Library: Playing in the Snow

Lesson 1 - Building a Snowman

  • Introduction: Ask the students to explain what weather is. Talk about how different seasons have different weather, and we're now going into winter. What weather is usually only in the winter? Ask the kids to list activities they might do in the snow. 
     
  • Readalouds: All You Need for a Snowman by Alice Schertle / illustrated by Barbara Lavallee and Snowballs by Lois Ehlert.
     
  • Activity: This depends on the kids' ability levels ... they can include include designing their own snowmen using the template below; playing snowman bingo by hat/scarf colors; cutting and pasting snowman elements. I paid for this packet of printable activities by planningplaytime.com, which includes counting and tracing.
     
  • Videos: 



Lesson 2 - Winter Clothing

  • Introduction: Ask if the kids know about seasons. Talk about features of each one.

  • Readalouds:  Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson, letting the kids take turns doing the actions on the pages; Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonthan London.
     
  • Activity: Coloring - pages 3 and 4 of this file
     
  • Video: Once a few kids have finished, play these songs for the kids to dance to on the rug.
     

 

 

Lesson 3 - Days of the Week

  • Introduction: Ask if the kids know about seasons. Talk about features of each one.
