13 Colonies Project

Overview: Over the next few classes, you will get to know a bit about each of the 13 English colonies in North America. 

Directions: You will need to create a presentation to get people motivated to want to move to your colony. You need to make the colony look interesting to people who are living in Europe. 

Categories: These are the categories that you need to cover in your research project.

  1. Map: You must include a detailed map of the colony.  

  •  Is it part of the Northern, Middle or Southern regions of the 13 Colonies?  

  1. Geography:  Cover the climate and geography of the area 

  • Do they have mountains, beaches, rivers, etc? 

  • What is the average temperature? 

  • How much rainfall do they get? 

  1. Economics: Under this section you will cover what the colony produces, distributes & consumes in resources. 

  • What natural resources are in the colony? 

  • What are the major industries/businesses developed in the colony? 

  • What major imports and exports does the colony have? 

  • Is there a single product/resource the colony is known for?  

  1. Society & Culture: Under this section you will cover demographic information and ways of life in the colony. 

  • What is the colony’s view of religion? State church? Tolerance? Religious tests? 

  • Family structures/patterns? Child rearing? Birth rates? Death Rates? Population density? 

  • What is the status of men and women in the colony? 

  • Types & levels of education? 

  • Social classes? Who is on top? Who is on bottom? 

  • Ethnic & racial patterns? A lot of diversity? Little diversity? 

  • Recreational activities? Games? Food?  

  1. Government & Politics: Under this section you will cover how the colony functioned politically. Consider the following: 

  • How is the government controlled? Who is in-charge? 

  • Is it run by the King? Corporation? Charter (what kind)? Lord? Councils?

  • Is there voting? Who can vote? 

  1. History & Founding: Under this section you will cover the political, economical & territorial issues surrounding the founding of the colony. 

  • Who founded the colony? When? Why? How? 

  • What, if any, difficulties has the colony faced during its founding? 

  • What major cities have been established in the colony? Give their dates.

  • Who are the major immigrants to the colony? Where did they come from? Why did they come? 

  • What major historical figures were involved in the colony? *both Europeans & Native Americans!* 

  • What Native American groups are original inhabitants to the region? 

  • What kind of relations does the colony have with Native American groups? 

Works Cited: You must record your information sources. Cite everything you do!

  • Try to find missing or incorrect information in website article

  • Type in ISBN number
  • Click on correct title
  • Click “Save”
  • Chapter in a Book
  • Find under “More”
  • Choose “Book Chapter”
  • Fill in information
  • Click "Save"
  • Database/E-Book articles
  • Copy formatted citation from database
  • Find under “More”
  • Choose Write/paste
  • Paste
  • Click “Save”
  1. When you are finished adding all citations 
  2. “Download Bibliography”
  3. Download to Google Drive
  4. Copy and paste the Works Cited page into your paper
