Cranston High School West Library: Rudnick - Energy Project

Energy Project

Purpose:

The main source of energy used in our world is oil.  Oil is a natural resource which is used in various ways to power our everyday necessities. Unfortunately within your lifetime we will run out of this natural resource.  It is estimated that within forty years we will use up all of the accessible oil on our planet. Within 70 or so years we will also run out of natural gas.  This creates the question: How will we survive without oil?

Objective:

Your task is to research different sources of energy and choose a source of energy that you think will be reliable enough to help us survive after oil is gone. You will be assigned one of the following renewable energy sources:

  • Solar power
  • Hydroelectric power
  • Wind energy
  • Tidal Energy
  • Biomass Energy
  • Geothermal Energy

Approved Websites:

US EIA renewable energy explained

Task:

You must create a Slides Presentation (minimum of 8 slides) that includes the following.

1. A title page - (4 points)

a. Must have a relevant title

b. Your name, the due date, and period

c. A picture of the type of energy that you chose

2. Short summary: Short explanation as to how this energy is used. (1 slide) (3 points)

3. Advantages and disadvantages of the type of energy that you chose (4 slides) (10 points)

a. Must have a minimum of 5 advantages

b. Must have a minimum of 5 disadvantages.

4. Start up and Costs: (2-3 slides) (5 points)

a. What are the start-up costs for your energy source? How much does it cost to build equipment needed to harness the energy?

b. What kind of maintenance is needed to keep up the equipment functioning?

c. What jobs are associated with and created due to this source of energy?

5. Efficiency: (1-2 slides) (3 points)

a. How much energy can be created?

b. Do we use all the energy created from this energy source?

c. Is some of the energy wasted or lost in transition?

d. Is there pollution associated with your choice?

6. Conclusion: ( 2 slides) (5 points)

a. Summary of your project

b. Do you think we could survive on this power alone or would we need more?

c. How could this type of power become more efficient or be improved in any way?

d. Why is this type of energy better than a few of the other ones?
