Cranston High School West Library: Of Mice and Men

Social Injustice Research Google Slide Project

The focus of the unit is Social Injustice during The Great Depression. Your question, slides, and presentation should focus on the social injustice aspect of your topic.

Social Injustice Definition: Social injustice is a situation when some unfair practices are being carried in the society. Whatever unjust is happening is usually against the law and it might not be something that is considered a moral practice. Basically, social injustice occurs when the equals are treated in an unequal way and the unequals are treated in an equal way.

Your job is to research how the time period (The Great Depression) reflects social injustices on your assigned topic (“weak social group” during this time period).  Topics will include the Elderly, Women, African-Americans, and the Mentally Disabled.

    Sample questions would include:

What social injustices did your “group” face?

How was your “group” viewed/treated during this period?

How does this treatment differ from today?

There are so many factors that influence the writing of a story that we must, as readers, always consider the context within which the book is written.  The setting (time and place) matters, the author's experiences matter, the current events of the time matter...

When examining Of Mice and Men it is crucial to understand this context and have adequate background knowledge to support your reading.  For this project, you will gain that knowledge through research. Each student has been assigned a "weak one" social group to research:  the Old, Women, African-Americans, and the Mentally Disabled.
