Cranston High School West Library: Federman - Civil Rights

Civil Rights Research Project

For this assignment, you will be researching The Civil Rights Movement in connection with the novel The Help. Each student will gather information and compile their findings to write a thorough report, in which they draw conclusions about the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and what life was like during this trying time.

You will first research ALL 4 topics/ articles!!

  1. Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat on the bus
  2. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech
  3. The Civil Rights Acts of 1964
  4. Jim Crow Laws and segregation during this time

Steps you will need to complete in order to be successful:

Preliminary Steps

  1. Library orientation to learn about the library and databases
  2. Research the 4 different events/people listed above.
  3. Print each article and ACTIVELY READ through each one (Mark text using reading strategies provided).  (HW GRADE)
  4. Write a summary on each article, using paraphrasing and direct quotes. (5 summaries = 1 HW GRADE)
  5. Answer analysis questions on Martin Luther King Jr. speech “I Have a Dream.” (HW GRADE)
  6. Be sure to cite each area that you paraphrase or quote using correct parenthetical citations.
  7. Create a works cited page following correct MLA format

After Preliminary Steps:

You will now write a 5 paragraph report/essay on your research from the last few days. In your report, you will discuss 3 out of 4 of the major events/people listed above. You will need to include PARAPHRASING AND CORRECT CITATIONS  for each paragraph, and  at least  2 DIRECT QUOTES for your entire paper. The following is a sample outline to guide you in your writing. (TEST GRADE)

 

Introduction Paragraph:

  • Hook (strong statements about racism,segregation,discrimination)
  • Background info about topic (segue into the topic by generally explaining how the time period is characterized in history)
  • Claim/main point (where you will draw a conclusion about the time period based on your research)

Body 1: Rosa Parks summary

Body 2: Jim Crow Laws and information on segregation summary

Body 3: Martin Luther King Speech- Discuss his main points and overall impact of this speech.

Conclusion:

  • Wrap up report with strong statements about the time period
  • Leave your reader with something to think about
  • Summarize/REWORD  your main points
  • DO NOT SAY IN CONCLUSION!!!
