Cranston High School West Library: Bianco - Societal Issue Narrative

Research/Narrative Writing End of Unit Writing Assessment

For this assignment, you will be writing a fictional narrative piece surrounding a major issue in today’s society. While this is a fictional narrative, you will need to research your social issue to gain an understanding of your topic and infuse some of this research into your story along with citations and a works cited page.

In the end you will turn in the following:

  • Your short story (2-3 pages)
  • An annotated works cited page properly formatted with a minimum of 3 articles.

To start, you will select an issue in today’s society that is causing conflict in your own life or among groups of people (see examples below). Write a fictional narrative about this conflict. You will need to create a fictional character involved in this conflict and develop a plot outline set in the present or near future in which this character moves from someone who struggles passively to a member who overcomes these issues. The leader can be a leader within themselves, their households, inner circle, society, etc.  Using that outline, write a narrative that shows this character’s transformation and the effect this transformation has on the conflict.

Societal issues to choose from:

  • Covid 19/Living through a pandemic (elderly isolation, worker, nurse, student, parent, patient)
  • Poverty or homelessness (advocate for it, victim of it, supporter)
  • Identity (Gender, sexual, cultural)
  • Racial and cultural issues or inequities
  • Abuses (animal, bullying)
  • Prison Reform
  • Pollution
  • Eliminating Arts/Sports
