Cranston High School West Library: Baranowski - The Holocaust

Holocaust Research Paper Assignment Details

Requirements: 2-3 pages typed in MLA format plus a Works Cited page. You also should be able to include at least 2 quotes from your sources.

Due date: Wednesday, March 28, 2018

As the generation of Holocaust survivors become fewer in number, it is extremely important for the lessons of the Holocaust to be passed on to the next generation. Prejudice may germinate from a tiny seed from perhaps a joke, or a remark, or insulting comment, and then can grow into an uncontrollable monster of hate which will lead humans to murder other humans slightly different than themselves. Today, being a silent bystander should not be and is not an option as the lessons of history has taught us to be better and we recognize these acts as crimes.

Topics:

You must research one topic about the Holocaust. (List below) In addition, you must analyze why it is vital that the remembrance and knowing of history,  especially the lessons of the Holocaust, be pass down to other generations as Holocaust survivors become fewer in numbers and this era may be forgotten.  How does this apply to present day problems?

  1. How and why were people rounded up and transported to the camps?  Who were chosen?  Describe their experience during their travel.  How were people treated when they arrived at the camp?  How were people classified and how were they separated?  What happened next?  How were they treated by the camp guards?   Did the people have to work at the camps?
  2. Where were these interment camps and who was sent there? Were all the camps the same? What were the differences among the camps?  Which were the most notorious and why?  What were some of the horrific things that happened to the camp inhabitants?  What happened to the children?   Were there experiments done on the inhabitants of the camps?
  3. What was the final solution to the Jewish question?  When did that begin?   What means were used by the Nazis to complete this task?   What were the death camps? Where were they located and what were the population numbers?

 *Alternative with permission

What does the German word “Lebensraum” mean and what role did it play in the Nazi plan.  Discuss the role of  “Strength through Joy”.   Why were the German people  ‘silent  bystanders’ and/or unaware of what was happening in the concentration camps.  Why do you think they were silent and oblivious?

In addition, you must analyze why it is vital that the remembrance and knowing of history, especially the lessons of the Holocaust, be passed down to other generations as Holocaust survivors become fewer in numbers and this era may be forgotten. How does this apply to present day problems?
