Cranston High School West Library: Buonfiglio - Presidential Legacies

Research Project Description

Early U.S. History Research Project—The Presidents of the United States of America

The purpose of this project is to introduce you to the men who have served as Presidents of the U.S. It is designed to help you to understand their backgrounds, accomplishments, failures, and the legacies they have left.

1. Please provide a title page containing your name, the name of the class, the teacher’s name, and the date submitted. Your title page should also include a visual image of your president.

2. Your research paper should be at least 3-4 pages in length and should utilize proper MLA format with regard to spacing, margins, font, and script. Please proofread your paper to ensure correct grammar. You must also include a properly formatted works cited page.

3. You will be providing a historical evaluation of the life and legacy of your president. Your research should not be limited to your subject’s presidential years, but should take into account the entire sweep of your president’s life. This would include non-governmental employment, military service, pervious political offices held, years as president, and post-presidential years.

If you were a historian and were evaluating your president’s life and legacy, would you rank him as outstanding, above average, average, or below average. Provide as much evidence as possible to support your choice and persuade the reader that you are correct. In the context of your evaluation, you should also address and explain any information that would counter your rating. For example, if you are claiming that your president is outstanding or above average, what is your response to any negative information that might be brought up to challenge your rating.
