Cranston High School West Library: Bianco/Roland - Holocaust Narrative

Assignment

How can goals/dreams change our future?

Based on the reading of the memoir Night and your knowledge of the Holocaust, you will create an original narrative in which the protagonist (a person from the Holocaust) is driven to action. Use what you have learned about the Holocaust and your own prior knowledge to inform your writing. You should write an imagined story about a real person from the Holocaust. The character should reflect on their experiences either before or after the Holocaust. Be sure to describe the connection between the person’s goal/dream and the primary conflict (the Holocaust) in your narrative. Remember to include the following:

  • a well-developed protagonist and other characters

  • a plot that includes pivotal moments

  • a distinct conflict and resolution

  • a clear setting

  • dialogue and descriptive details

  • a thoughtful theme or reflection connected to the prompt

Introduction to Narrative Writing

Narrative writing tells a story of experiences or events that have been imagined by a writer. Good narrative writing effectively uses genre characteristics and craft such as relevant descriptive details and a purposeful structure with a series of events that contain a beginning, middle, and end. The characteristics of fiction writing include:

  • setting

  • characters

  • plot

  • theme/reflection

  • point of view

In addition to these characteristics, narrative writers also carefully craft their work through their use of dialogue, details, word choice, and figurative language. These choices help to shape the tone, mood, and overall style of the text. Effective narratives combine these genre characteristics and craft to engage the reader.
